This is a really cool car. It was raced by Randy Pobst in the ill fated US Super Touring Car
Championship. The car originally came from the Italian series according to one of the mechanics I
spoke with at Long Beach. The car was subsequently on display at CEC on Santa Monica Blvd. I drove
right by it on my way to work for many months as it sat in the display window. But it took LA
area E30 M3 owner Fred Larimer to actually think to take pictures of the roll cage design. So here they
are for us all to enjoy 8^)
This photo clearly displays the "double main-hoop" design that BMW Motorsport has used on just about
all their Touring Cars since circa 1991. If you follow the tubes you can figure out the load paths.
This design is probably only advantageous on a rear wheel drive car. The FWD Touring Cars have much
simpler cages in the rear. As with all the European sedan race cars, note how far back the shoulder
harnesses are mounted and the fact that there is no seat brace, or any other tube directly behind
the driver.
