Upgraded Transmission Mount

A cheap factory solution

Upgraded BMW tranny mount next to standard S14 unit

The factory spec'd transmission mounts for the E30 M3 are not particularly rugged. This should be fairly obvious from the photo above, which shows the factory mount on the left. It is clear that one of the primary goals at Motorsport for the publicly sold E30 M3 was to minimize intrusion of the S14's notorious vibration into the cabin. The factory mounts do a good job of damping out vibration in conjunction with the original motor mounts (as good a job as they can anyway). But there is another BMW produced motor mount from the e24 series which is cheap, much stiffer, and basically bolts right up. This mount is shown on the right in the photo above.

A view of the two motor mounts on the factory tranny brace

The photo at right displays the two tranny mounts mounted on the factory S14 transmission brace. The only modification that needs to be made in order to accommodate the stiffer mounts is that the holes in the aluminum transmission brace have to be drilled to a larger size in order to accept the larger studs on the new mount. The original mount has lower studs which are 6 mm in diameter and the new mount has lower studs which are 8 mm in diameter. Both mounts have upper studs which are 8 mm in diameter, so no changes are required on that end.
