Gary Bossert's Grp A Roll Cage: Photo #2
Gary Bossert's Grp A Roll Cage: Photo #2
This is the where the forward bars come up to the top of the windshield. This Grp A cage has a forward "hoop" as well as a "main" hoop. So where usually the forward bars would extend up from the floor pan and bend back towards the main hoop near the roof, on this cage the forward bar wraps up and over the top of the windshield (and then back down to the opposite floorpan). Two short tubes run above the side windows and tie the forward hoop to the main hoop. Note the gussets in the corners. BMW still uses these on their more recent E36 roll cages. We can also just make out the "roof diagonal" which runs from the forward left corner of the roof to the rearward right corner. This gives the driver a little more headroom. We can also see some of the "seam welding" on the roof panels.
