Emissions Test Results w/ Modified 2.5L Engine |
These are the results from my Year 2001 California Emissions Test. As you can see my car passed well within margins. This is the first smog test I had to undertake after rebuilding my engine. And the California smog test is now done on a chassis dyno and measures for NOx (as well as HC and %CO), thus it is tougher than it's ever been. The engine is a heavily modified 2.5L S14. Basically Evo III everything and then some, including the Jim C. chip for the 2.5L engine with Evo III injectors. One caveat: I have a very big and very new catalytic converter installed. This is most likely the reason that my engine passed with such flying colors. Also the smog station technician knew he should get the cat' nice and hot before performing the test. Some folks express disbelief that these numbers could be so low. I agree, they do seem very good, but there is a second data point with similar results. Jim Butterworth recently passed his emissions test with equally wide margins, with an engine almost identical to mine, and also with a big new catalytic converter. His test results are shown below and were obtained at a completely different test station, and about 5 months earlier. So that's a two data point tend 8^) This is just FYI for those having trouble passing their smog test. Maybe a new catalytic converter is in order? |

Here are my smog test results from 2003. The engine configuration is unchanged from 2001. Notice that California has tightened up the NOx requirements. Also note that I was required to go to a "test only" station due to the fact that the E30 M3 is classified as a "High Emitter". Hopefully I was able to bring down the average a bit 8^) |
